In Loving Memory of Elder Carol O. Thomas

Elder Carol O. Thomas was a member of Christ Temple for almost five decades. Soon after his arrival at the church, Pastor Clark recognized his many gifts and talents and, most importantly, knew he could depend on Elder Thomas.

Elder Thomas held many roles, principal among them, Executive Minister. That title was fitting. Elder T, as he was lovingly called by many, not only managed most of the business affairs of the Church, but also preached, taught Sunday School and Bible classes, prepared those designated for ordination as deacons, visited the sick, stood arm in arm with the grieving, counseled saints, seekers, and married couples, and coordinated Wednesday service—HITT (Hymns, Intercession, Testimony, and Teaching) Night.

He also served as a liaison with other churches, community organizations, social justice initiatives, and faith-based institutions locally, nationally, and internationally. Whether assisting the music ministry at the piano or serving communion to the shut-in, Elder Thomas delighted in every role he fulfilled.

Elder Thomas was instrumental in managing the Thanksgiving outreach for the community. For many years, he coordinated contributions from local businesses to support Christ Temple’s annual effort to provide meals for hundreds in the Harlem community. This outreach ministry now proudly bears his name.

Recognizing that families needed support year-round, Elder T established a food pantry at Christ Temple. Alongside Sister Loria Frizzell and dedicated volunteers, he worked tirelessly to build a system that continues to serve many families in need.

With both spiritual and physical nourishment in mind, Elder Thomas also started a vegetable and flower garden on the church grounds. His wife, Sister Marjorie West Thomas, continues this legacy, providing fresh vegetables and herbs to the community.

Elder Thomas managed maintenance and repairs of the church building and adjoining house. He took great pride in using his skills, intellect, and creativity to build and improve whatever was needed for the benefit of the church.

He was also known for his famous punch—a blend that reflected his personality: homemade, a mix of many ingredients, supersweet, and always filled with love.

Elder Carol O. Thomas was called to his heavenly home on August 20, 2024.

He will forever be remembered not only as a devoted servant of Christ but as a friend to all who had the joy of knowing him.
